I also though that young Sy must have felt like he wasn't in control of his situation, but he WAS in control with Will & Mayra in the only way he knew how: by using the same control tactics that his dad used on him. I recently watched the movie again on HBOMax and something clicked: Maybe the whole "this is pretend" spiel were things his dad said to him as a child, while he was taking "pictures of him doing things children shouldn't be doing"? I would imagine that Sy's dad told young Sy to do these things "for pretend" to make him feel like "it's ok to do this"/"this is our secret." In Sy's father's mind, he can take pictures of young Sy simulating sexual acts and not actually touching, so he doesn't get in trouble? Sy knew how psychologically damaging it was for him to be forced to take these pictures, so he wanted Will and Mayra to feel the same for having an affair. If Will and Mayra weren't really touching in their pictures, it meant it wasn't real/didn't happen. ![]() I always wondered why he kept wanting it to "be pretend." At first, I thought it was because he was so infatuated with the Yorkins that he just couldn't believe an affair was happening, so he wanted it to be an illusion. Sy's "just taking pictures" sounds more innocent and literal. The part, in the beginning, when the cop says "These aren't very good pictures" (or whatever he says) & Sy saying "I was just taking pictures" takes a whole new meaning: We thought "these aren't good pictures" meant they were scandalous pics, but "aren't good" really meant they mean nothing/they're just random objects. Hence, the reveal of the "pictures" that were really random shots of an empty hotel room AND we hear him talk to the cop about how he was abused, as a child, by his dad. Personally, I think he actually did threaten those 2 with a knife to take pictures of them doing the sexy poses, however, he didn't have film inside the camera (as more of a "mind fuck" for Will & Mayra). The exchange of Romanek saying "I literally was looking for a camera that had the longest lens to symbolize that!" And Williams imagining Romanek saying "Give me the Freudian lens" is wonderful banter! Williams pointing out the "phallic lens" in the scene where he's spying on Nina to pick up Jake's photos. Romanek chose for Sy to watch a Simpsons episode to make the audience have a little chuckle before the shock value of the Yorkin photo wall reveal. The 2 parts that stick out, to me, are: 1. I was obsessed with One Hour Photo when it first came out! And it is even more fun to watch it with the DVD commentary with Mark Romanek and Robin Williams.
